What is a challenge?

"Assignments" is a module where students submit work such as reports via file upload or online text, and instructors grade the submissions.

How to Use the Assignment

Details of the Assignment

<General>
Enter the "Assignment name" as a required field, and enter a "Description" if necessary.

  • Assignment name: The title of the module displayed within the course.

  • Description: This is the module description. It is suitable for providing details about the assignment.

  • Activity Instructions: This is the text displayed on the assignment submission page. It is intended for providing instructions and notes regarding the submission process.

  • Additional Files: You can upload files containing assignment formats and other guidelines.

<Availability>
You can set the schedule, including the start and end dates and times for the assignment.

  • Allow submissions from: Set the start date and time for accepting assignment submissions.

  • Due Date: Set the date and time when the assignment submission period ends.
    *Assignments may still be submitted after the deadline. If an assignment is submitted after the deadline, the student will be notified that the deadline has passed.

  • Cutoff Date: Set the date and time after which assignments can no longer be submitted. If you do not want to accept submissions after the due date and time, set the cutoff date and time to match the due date and time.

  • Remind me to grade by: This is the scheduled date for grading. A notification will be sent to the teacher's dashboard.

<Submission Types>
You can choose the submission method. For online text submissions, you can choose between typing directly into the browser or submitting a file. (You may select both options.)

  • Submission Type: Select a submission method.

    • Online text: Type your response on the page and submit it.
    • File Submissions: Upload and submit the file you prepared in advance.
  • Maximum number of uploaded files: Set the maximum number of assignments to upload.

  • Maximum submission size: Sets the upper limit for the file size of submissions.

  • Accepted file types: Select the file formats you want to allow for submission.

<Feedback Types>
Configure the method for providing feedback after submission.

  • Feedback Type: You can select any of the following options.

    • Feedback Comments: You can provide feedback by entering comments on the grading screen.
    • Feedback Files: By reviewing submitted assignments and uploading the files, you can return the results to students and provide them with feedback.
    • Offline Grading Worksheet: You can upload an Excel-format grading worksheet with grades and feedback comments entered, allowing you to apply grades in bulk.
  • Comment inline: This feature allows you to grade online text by copying the submitted text into the feedback field and adding comments directly to the text.

<Submission settings>
Configure settings related to student submissions.

  • Require students to click the submit button: If "Yes" is selected, the student's submission will be saved as a draft at that point, and they will need to click the "Submit" button to finalize their submission.

  • Require that students accept the submission statement: When students submit assignments, you can display the submission agreement and ask them to agree to it.

  • Allowed attempts: Set the number of times an assignment can be submitted. You can choose from Unlimited or 1–30.

  • Grant attempts: Select how to allow resubmissions. This option appears when the "Allowed number of submissions" is set to 2 or more. You can choose from Manual, Automatic, or Automatic until Passed.

<Group Submission Settings>

  • Students submit in groups: If you have set up groups for the course, you can allow assignments to be submitted by group.

<Notifications>
Configure notification settings.

  • Notify graders about submissions: Sends a notification to the teacher when an assignment is submitted.

  • Notify graders about late submissions: We will send a notification to the instructor when a submission is received after the deadline has passed.

  • Default for 'Notify student': Set the default state of the "Notify students" button that appears when grades are entered.

<Grade>
Configure the grading settings.

  • Grade: Set the grade type.

    • Point: Numerical grade
    • None: No grade is assigned; evaluation consists of feedback only
    • Scale: Evaluation based on the rating scale configured on the site
  • Grading Method: Configure the grading method.

    • Simple Direct Grading: This is the standard grading method. Grades are assigned manually for each student.
    • Marking Guide: Grading is conducted in accordance with a pre-set grading guide. A description of the evaluation criteria is displayed to students.

- Rubric: A method for evaluating performance against specific criteria. It involves creating a predefined checklist and selecting the options that indicate whether the criteria have been met. This method allows multiple evaluators to share the same set of criteria.

  • Grade category: This option is available if you have configured categories in the grading rubric. It allows you to calculate a final grade by summing the scores from other modules.

  • Grade to pass: Sets the passing score for the module. This also affects activity completion and course completion.

  • Anonymous submissions: Students submit their assignments to teachers anonymously and are graded.

  • Hide grader identity from students: This prevents students from seeing the graders' IDs.

  • Use marking workflow: You can manage the grading status of each student’s submission using stages (statuses) such as “Not Graded” or “In Progress.” This is useful when multiple graders are involved or when you want to release grades to all students at once after grading is complete. (If you select “No,” grades will be released to students sequentially as they are completed.)

  • Use grading assignments: You can set this option by selecting "Yes" for "Use grading workflow." You can assign a grader to each student.
