Regarding the Structure of the Text for Fill-in-the-Blank Questions

The symbols used when creating questions function as follows:
Please enter your information using half-width characters.

Symbol Meaning of symbols
{ } When specifying the location of a fill-in-the-blank question, enclose it in {}.
{the integers such as 1 or 2 entered next Score for the question. This indicates the score assigned to the answer for the blank space.
: Used when defining a question type. Enclose the definition in colons, like :SA:.
= Indicates the correct answer. Place this before the correct answer.
# Start of feedback message. Use this when you want to add a feedback comment to an answer.
~ Indicates a separator. Use the tilde (~) to separate items when defining the content of your response.
Indicates "Other" This is used in fill-in-the-blank questions to indicate answers other than those listed.
This indicates the percentage of the total score allocated to a specific answer. It applies to answers prefixed with a percentage (e.g., 70% Japan
). In the case of “70% Japan,” this means that 70% of the total score is allocated to the answer “Japan.” (The “=” symbol is equivalent to a 100% allocation.)

Types of Fill-in-the-Blank Questions

1. Essay-style answers (case-sensitive)

Definition notation: SHORTANSWER_C, SA, MWC

The instructions specify that answers must be case-sensitive. For example, suppose the question requires the answer to be entered in uppercase, and the correct answer is "BASEBALL"; in this case, the scoring rules would be defined for answers such as "Baseball."
"BASEBALL" is written in all caps, so it is correct. "Baseball" has only the first letter capitalized, so it is partially correct. All other answers are incorrect. This method is useful for distinguishing between correct and incorrect answers when the answer is the same word, such as "BASEBALL."
The structure is as follows.
{1:MWC:=BASEBALL\~%50%Baseball\~*}

Display results

other text

You will be asked to fill in the blanks above to answer the question. The results will be as follows: "BASEBALL" will receive a 100% score, "Baseball" will receive a 50% score, and all others will receive a 0% score.

2. Multiple-choice (horizontal checkbox layout)

Definition notation: MULTIRESPONSE_H, MRH
This is a fill-in-the-blank exercise where the options are displayed horizontally as checkboxes, and you select them by checking the box. The format is as follows.

{2:MRH:=Defense#Correct\~Offense#Incorrect}
Display results

3. Multiple-choice (drop-down)

Definition: MULTICHOICE, MC

This is a response format where you select an answer from a list of options using a drop-down menu. The structure is as follows:

When you open the dropdown menu, you can select either 9 or 18.

4. Multiple-choice (radio buttons arranged in a vertical column)

Definition notation: MULTICHOICE_V, MCV

This is a question where the options are displayed vertically as circles, and you select an option to answer. The format is as follows:
{4:MCV:=Pitcher#Correct\~Catcher#Incorrect\~Center Fielder#Incorrect}
Display results

5. Multiple-choice (horizontal radio buttons)

Notation: MULTICHOICE, MCH

This is a question format where the answer choices are displayed as circles next to each option, and you select one to answer. The structure is as follows.

other text

6. Multiple-choice (checkboxes arranged vertically)

Definition: MULTIRESPONSE, MR
This is a question where the options are displayed vertically as checkboxes, and you select them by checking the boxes. The format is as follows.
{6:MR:=High#Correct\~Low#Incorrect}
Display results

7. Essay-style answers (case-insensitive)

  • Layout of items: Sets the orientation of items whose order is to be rearranged.

  • Item Selection Type: Specify whether to use all items to reorder or only a subset of them.

    • Select all items: Use all items entered in the "Drag-and-drop items" field.
    • Select a random subset of items: This option randomly selects a subset of the items entered in the "Drag-and-drop items" field. (Example) Set the following as questions: a set consisting of drag-and-drop items 1 and 3, a set consisting of items 2 and 3, and a set consisting of items 1 and 4.

    • Select a contiguous subset of items: Use the items entered in the "Drag-and-drop items" field in a contiguous, partial selection.
      (Example) Set the following as questions: a set consisting of drag-and-drop items 1 and 2, a set consisting of items 2 and 3, and a set consisting of items 3 and 4.

  • Size of subset: If "Select a subset" is selected in the item selection type, this setting determines how many draggable items to use.

  • Grading Type: Configure how grades are assigned based on the arrangement.

    • All or Nothing: You get a perfect score if all items are in the correct position; otherwise, you get 0 points.

    • Absolute position: If an item is in the same position as the correct answer, it is considered correct. The maximum possible score for the question is equal to the number of items displayed to the student.

    • Relative to correct position: If an item is in the same position as the correct answer, it is considered correct. Correct items are awarded a score equal to the number of displayed items minus one. Incorrect items are awarded a score equal to the number of displayed items minus one, minus the distance from the correct position of that item.

    • Relative to the next items (excluding last): If an item is followed by the correct answer, that item is considered correct. The item in the last position is not checked. Therefore, the maximum possible score for this question is one point less than the number of items displayed to the student.

    • Relative to the next items (including last): If an item is followed by the correct answer, that item is considered correct. This includes the last item, provided that no other items follow it. Therefore, the maximum possible score for that question is equal to the number of items displayed to the student.

    • Relative to both of the previous and next items: If both the preceding and following items match the correct answer, that item is considered correct. The first item must not have a preceding item. The last item must not have a following item.

    • Relative to All the previous and next items: If an item is preceded by all items that match the correct answer and followed by all items that match the correct answer, that item is considered the correct answer. The order of the preceding items is irrelevant. Similarly, the order of the following items is irrelevant.

    • Longest ordered subset: The score is the number of items contained in the longest ordered subset. The highest possible score is equal to the number of items displayed. A subset must contain at least two items. A subset does not need to start with the first item, nor do the items need to be consecutive. If there are multiple subsets of the same length, the items in the subset found first when searching from left to right are displayed as correct. All other items are marked as incorrect.

    • Longest contiguous subset: The score is the number of items contained in the longest consecutive subset. The highest possible score is equal to the number of items displayed. A subset must contain at least two items. A subset does not need to start with the first item, but it must be consecutive. If there are multiple subsets of the same length, the items in the subset found first when searching from left to right are displayed as correct. All other items are marked as incorrect.

  • Grading Details: Set whether to display grading details when students take the exam.

  • Number the choices?: Set whether to number the options or label them with letters.

  • Draggable items: Enter the items to be placed in the correct order.

  • Combined feedback: Configure feedback for correct and incorrect answers after the test.

  • Multiple tries: If the quiz is set to adaptive mode, configure the hints and penalties applied for incorrect answers.

<Extra restrictions on attempts>

  • Require password: You can set this option so that students cannot take the test unless they enter the password specified by the teacher.
  • Require network address: You can restrict access to quizzes from specific subnets on the LAN or from the Internet using partial or full IP addresses separated by commas. This feature is useful for administering quizzes that are accessible only to students in specific classrooms.

  • Enforced delay between later attempts: If enabled, you will not be able to take the test again until the specified amount of time has elapsed after your second or subsequent attempt.
  • Browser Security: During exams, you can use JavaScript to administer quizzes. This prevents students from copying and pasting the question screen.

<Overall Feedback>

You can display different feedback based on the overall score of the quiz. Specify the score at which the feedback changes in the "Score Threshold" section. Additionally, you can configure feedback for individual questions on the question editing page.

  • Activity Completion: To access this, you must complete the activity for the specified module. (See the "Completion conditions" section.)
  • Date: Access will be restricted until the specified date.
  • Grade: You will be able to access this content once you reach the specified score for the designated activity.
  • User Profile: Only students who meet the criteria in the user profile will be able to access it.
  • Group: Only members of the specified group can access this.

<Completion Conditions>

Configure whether to enable the activity completion feature. You can choose whether students manually mark the activity as complete or whether it is marked as complete when specific conditions are met. By combining this setting with access restrictions, you can encourage students to progress through the module in stages.

<Competencies>

You can assign competencies to modules. Competencies refer to a list of items necessary to achieve learning objectives. To use this feature, an administrator must enable competencies site-wide and configure the settings.

For items not listed here, please refer to the official Moodle website or click the "?" icon in the bottom-right corner of each screen to access "Documentation for this page."
